The well-equipped lab spaces and facilities include the Apparel Pattern Making & Drafting Lab, Sewing Lab, Leather Workshop, Wood Working Workshop, Metal Working Lab, and Casting & Enamelling workshop.
ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO
Design education is a hands-on process and besides the theoretical inputs, a lot of learning happens by doing. To facilitate this, Poornima University has dedicated studios for each year, which are where the maximum time of an architecture student is spent and where a student learns the most. A design studio or drawing studio is a workplace for designers and architects engaged in conceiving, designing and developing new products, objects or buildings. Facilities in a design studio include furniture art equipment best suited for design work and extending to work benches, small machines, computer equipment, paint shops and large presentation boards and screens. Typically, architecture studio classes include distinctive educational techniques, such as “desk-crits” (project critiques delivered at a student’s desk).
100 KWP SOLAR PLANT
With the challenging situation of global climate change and need of carbon credit control Poornima University has taken an initiative by setting up 100 kWp grid connected roof top Solar PV energy system on the academic block of Poornima University. This system promotes green energy and clean energy. It is also an inspiration as well as resource for the students for conducting study, research, development and applications of solar energy. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the technologies of solar power generation at a place which is visited by young and innovative minds. It helps students to see the installation, understand it and take the message back to the states for replication of similar models.
General Specifications of the solar module are as follows:
- Capacity of Plant: 100 kWp
- Cost of Plant: 79.49 Lacs INR
- Date of Commissioning: Wednesday, February 10, 2016
- Daily Power Generation: 400-450 KWH (On Sunny Days)
- Annual Power Generation: 1, 50,000 Units
Online real time access to the generation data and performance specifications is also available with help of interconnected local area network. Following are the advantages of solar PV energy system:
- Awareness for social change: It will be helpful in creating awareness amongst the young minds for exchanging ideas, information and awareness in society for such initiatives of clean energy.
- Environment Friendly: As an initiative towards green campus it will be helpful in cutting down dependence on conventional energy as well as it will contribute towards carbon credit control and control of pollution.
- Research & Development: It will be helpful for understanding the theory and applications of rooftop Solar PV system. Detailed case study, reports, research ideas and new development can be formulated.
The main inspiration to build this power plant has been taken from an ambitious plan of India which plans to build large grid connected solar power plants, with a cumulative installed capacity of 20,000 MWP by 2020, under the National Solar Mission. Hence, it is essential to document the performance of the grid-connected solar power plant installed in Rajasthan. Solar energy can contribute to about 7 percent of our total power needs and lead to a reduction of more than 30 percent of our coal imports, one of the eight missions under the NAPCC is the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission which was launched in late 2009. The mission targets 22,000 Mw of power by 2022 keeping in mind the importance of show casing solar technology.
Automobile Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with designing, manufacturing and operating automobiles. It is a segment of vehicle engineering which deals with motorcycles, buses, trucks, etc. It includes mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety elements. The various labs and workshops encompass the vital aspects of Hydraulics, Machine Tools, and Heat Engines etc. The laboratories/workshops are fully equipped with complete set of latest equipment’s and tools, which caters to the need of the undergraduate and post graduate students and has experienced technical staff from industrial background. We also have the state of the art facilities in central workshop with Machine shop, Engine Lathe, Center Lathe, Carpentry shop, Fitting shop, Foundry, Fabrication shop, Welding Shop.
Practice and experiential learning are critical to a robust Architectural & Civil Engineering pedagogy. At the Poornima University campus, a dedicated construction yard where the students learn by doing is an integral part of the education process.
SEWERAGE TREATMENT PLANT
Poornima University, located on 32 acres in an arid area, runs a sewage treatment plant round-the-clock. Together it process 150000 lakh liters a day. The plants use no chemicals in the treatment process. Their bioremediation is aided by Effective Microbes (EM) technology.
The treatment process is carried out in three steps. In the collection tank, EM is added. A removable grid screen traps stones, plastic and other solid waste material. From here, the effluent is pumped to the aeration tank. A mechanical aerator helps dissolve atmospheric oxygen into the effluent water. After a retention time of 24 hours in the aeration tank, during which microbes act on the wastewater, the effluent is taken to a settling tank where suspended solids are removed.
BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) tests are regularly conducted to ascertain the water quality. “While the BOD of untreated sewage is around 200 ppm, the BOD of treated sewage is less than 20ppm,” explains Sh. Hari Singh Shekhawat, Director (Infrastructure). To operate the plant, he has a team of one supervisor and one worker.
The treated water is pumped into storage tanks. Approximately 1.5 lakh litres of water that is recovered every day, is used for flushing of toilets and irrigating the extensive campus lawns and the gardens. In this way, water is injected back into the soil. This has helped recharge ground water levels also.
Architecture is closely linked to the natural world. A study in Architecture would be incomplete without understanding the geographical and climatologically phenomena. To facilitate this, the Poornima University has an equipped Meteorological Observatory with the instruments and facilities needed to ensure that the students are trained and competent to handle this aspect of the profession as well.
